41hm before
Landmannalaugar, in the middle of nowhere, we got a puncture. It was
even worse: the left rear tire was completely destroyed what gave us
no hope for fixing it. The spare tire was much smaller than the
others, the tools we found in the car were to small and it wasn't a
main road (guess what it means here: NO traffic). Our only hope was to
find someone who could help us. With a great effort of several people
and especially one guy who stayed with us for 2 hours or more (it was
already 1a.m.). Eventually we (mostly that man) managed to repair the
car temporarily. Thank you dear Icelanders for helping eagerly and
wanting nothing in return. Barely conscious we got to Landmannalaugar,
found our beds and fell asleep immediately.
The next day
Things were getting clearer in the morning. We were about
to in hiking for 3 days and the owner of our car said we would have it
repaired by that time. The communication was quite easy as, to my
suprise, i could connect to the internet there. Landmannalaugar hut
has a few common bedrooms, a well equipped kitchen and toilets. There
is a small hot lake, a camping site and a little reception where you
can charge your laptop, camera or anytging else (500 ikr) and buy a
hiking map (1000-1400 ikr).
We were ready to set off. The
next 4 hours are indescribable so you better wait for the pictures.
The trail from Landmannalaugar goes through beautifuly colored
mountains, got springs, fields of java and snow, with awesome
sceneries. It's one of the most beautiful places i've seen in my life.
Now I'm going to check he temperature of nearby got springs is proper
for wading in them.
